FIFTEEN FINALISTS QUALIFY IN SEARCH FOR OUTSTANDING COOPS IN LOCAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Fifteen cooperatives from all over the country qualified for the finals of the COOP-LGU Partnership Awards (CLPA) 2003 after a grueling site validation process conducted by government and academic institutions recently.
The CLPA recognizes and awards outstanding cooperatives that have joined hands with local governments in implementing social and economic development projects in local communities.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. is spearheading the Cooperative-LGU Partnership Award (CLPA) in collaboration with the Land Bank of the Philippines, UP National College of Public Administration and Governance, UP Center for Local and Regional Governance, PUP Institute of Cooperatives, and the Cooperative Development Authority.
Awards will be given to the outstanding cooperatives in three categories – partnership with a provincial government, partnership with a city government and partnership with a municipal government.
The winners for each category will receive a cash grant of P100, 000 and a plaque of recognition at the awarding ceremonies to be held at the Senate on July 31, 2003. The partner local government units will likewise be recognized during this occasion.
The finalists for partnership with a province are Coop Rural Bank of Plaridel, Bulacan; Ipil Consumers MPC of Zamboanga Sibugay; Malabing Valley Multipurpose Cooperative, Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya; ORT Community MPC, San Fernando, La Union; and Tolong MPC, Sta Catalina, Negros Oriental.
The successful cooperatives that have partnered with a municipality are Basud Development Cooperative, Camarines Norte; Lamac MPC, Pinamungajan, Cebu; Magsaysay Farmers MPC of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Moncada Women’s Cooperative of Moncada, Tarlac; and Paglaum MPC of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental.
Finalists in the city category are Hijo Employees ARB of Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Lumbang MPC of Lipa City, Batangas; San Jose Del Monte Kooperatiba ng Bayan sa Kaunlaran of Bulacan; St. Jude MPC, Lucena City, Quezon; and Soro-Soro Ibaba Development Cooperative, Batangas.
“The success of these cooperatives in implementing anti-poverty and people empowerment projects show that partnership with local governments is not only possible but desirable if they both share the objective of improving the quality of life in local communities,” said Pimentel, principal author of the Local Government Code and the Cooperative Code.
The finalists – both the cooperative and its partner local government unit – will be interviewed by a national steering committee composed of the following: Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. Land Bank of the Philippines President Gary Teves; UP President Francisco Nemenzo, Philippine Star Editor-in-Chief Issac Belmonte, Polytechnic University of the Philippines President Ofelia Carague, Dr. Florangel Rosario Braid of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, Executive Director Sandra Paredes of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) and Coop-LGU Project Director Prospero E. de Vera.
